"As the book by world-renowned historian Robert Belot, a specialist in European history, reminds us very aptly, European consciousness was forged at a time when Europe was experiencing the worst period of its history.
The rebirth of the European ideal was the work of men and women who, at the risk of their lives, fought against Nazi Europe and imagined a peaceful and democratic Europe.
We must not forget what we owe them. Loyalty to their struggle and their ideal remains our horizon, despite the vicissitudes that European construction has experienced in the postwar period and the headwinds that the desire for Europe has encountered. Historically, the intensity of the pace of European integration has never been constant. On the contrary, the conclusion of new treaties and the revision of existing ones have occurred mainly in conjunction with momentous upheavals on a global scale.
The examples are countless and well known by now. The end of World War II and the intensification of bipolar competition in the early 1950s fostered the creation of the European Coal and Steel Community and, later, the European Economic Community. [...]
